Adisseo is bolstering its methionine production capacity to meet accelerating demand driven by rising poultry and swine production, signaling confidence in the future of the market even as new competitors bring capacity online.
The methionine market is experiencing robust growth tied directly to expanding animal protein production, in both poultry and swine sectors in 2025. This organic expansion is being amplified by shifting industry practices that favor increased methionine inclusion rates in animal feed formulations, Adisseo’s Global Business Director – SBU Methionine, Kun Xing said.
According to Xing, multiple factors are driving higher methionine inclusion rates. Feed producers, for instance, are implementing higher lysine recommendations to improve breast meat yield in poultry, while greater availability of other amino acids enables more sophisticated feed cost optimization. The adoption of low-crude-protein diets for environmental reasons also requires increased synthetic amino acid supplementation. Additionally, expanded access to different raw materials in feed formulation has created opportunities for greater methionine addition.
The market is simultaneously experiencing a shift in product preferences. “In 2025, liquid OH-Methionine (HMTBa) continued to grow faster than the global methionine market, thanks to its increasing supply and practical benefits for customers. Powder methionine sources like DL-Methionine, remaining essential for certain customer segments, also kept growing. Overall, methionine demand was growing steadily, and the market was evolving toward more specialized and efficient feeding strategies,” Xing said. “The market presence of liquid HMTBa continues to expand as product availability increases.”
“On the supply side, outputs of the new industrial plant have been delivered to the market in 2025, after some delay. Meanwhile, in 2025 some other production capacities or outputs have been reduced. We have seen in the past and today we still see that nominal capacities do not mean real supply into the market with further consideration of logistics/supply chain aspects,” she added.
Adisseo is deploying multiple strategies to ensure supply stability for customers navigating volatile global conditions.
“Adisseo’s strategy combines multiple assets – two Rhodimet AT88 platforms: our industrial plant in Nanjing, and one at Burgos with already 50 years history; and a solid offer in powder methionine, with production of Rhodimet NP99 in France at Roches-Roussillon plant and soon a new plant in China – to ensure reliable supply and long-term resilience.,” said Hervé Alexandre, Executive Director – SBU Methionine, Adisseo.
“We are among a few leaders of the market who continue to invest in new production capacities via incremental capacities in existing sites or new industrial plants to ensure this supply consistency,” Alexandre added.
From the new capacity standpoint (debottlenecking) in 2026, expanded capacity for Rhodimet AT88 (an additional 40,000 tons) is expected to become operational at Adisseo’s Burgos, Spain plant and in 2027 for Nanjing.
And the company’s new facility in Fujian, China, which was announced in August 2023, is progressing on schedule for startup at the beginning of 2027. The plant represents an investment of approximately CNY4.9 billion (approximately $683 million) and is designed to produce 150,000 tons annually of DL-methionine.
Located within a large chemical park, the project benefits from strong integration and synergies, ensuring competitiveness and sustainability, said Adisseo. According to the company, this plant complements its strategic position in liquid OH-Methionine by adding significant DL-methionine capacity, allowing to serve all customer segments and regions. Importantly, this project is fully financed and backed by committed shareholders, reflecting Adisseo’s disciplined approach to growth and ability to deliver on time and on budget, Adisseo added.
Adisseo also maintains an integrated global network of production sites and regional storage hubs, complemented by flexible logistics and multiple shipping routes, allowing the company to anticipate disruptions and maintain continuity even during challenging market conditions.
“Our Rhodimet AT88 supply chain is designed for reliability and optimized lead times, supported by dedicated infrastructure for bulk deliveries worldwide. We have invested in strategic storage locations close to customers and developed multiple routing options to secure flow. These assets are complemented by digital tracking systems that provide real-time visibility,” Alexandre said.
According to Alexandre, by combining global production capacity with local responsiveness, Adisseo ensures that customers receive products when and where they need it, reinforcing trust and operational efficiency across all markets.
Adisseo anticipates continued strong demand for methionine this year, with poultry industry growth in 2026 projected at around 2.5% compared to 2025, according to Rabobank forecasts shared by Xing.
Beyond managing its Rhodimet portfolio to provide customers worldwide with secure and competitive solutions, particularly as the market shifts toward more sustainable and efficient feeding practices, Adisseo offers technical support and services that help customers optimize inclusion rates and manage transitions between different methionine sources, notably when using liquid HMTBa, Xing went on to say. Adisseo is also supporting customers in sustainability initiatives, such as Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for Rhodimet products, and continues updating that analysis, while implementing projects to further reduce its environmental footprint, especially in its manufacturing plants.
