What is Expana IQ?
Expana IQ is Expana’s AI product suite, built to help users maximise the value they get from Expana. Current Expana IQ products and features range from AI-powered search and contextual summaries to a conversational cost model builder and an MCP connector.
What AI techniques does Expana IQ use?
Expana IQ uses a variety of AI techniques and technologies, depending on the specific use case. This includes machine learning models trained on Expana data, natural language processing (NLP) techniques such as embedding models, and large language models (LLMs) to power generative AI use cases.
What LLMs does Expana IQ use?
Expana IQ utilises LLMs provided by established third–party LLM providers, hosted directly within Expana’s private cloud infrastructure on Azure. The specific models used vary by use case and are subject to change over time, as we seek to use the most suitable models for each use case. For more information, see our Trust Centre.
Can I limit which LLM models are used by Expana IQ?
No. Expana IQ uses specific models for specific use cases to ensure a high-quality experience. We do not support provider selection.
How accurate is Expana IQ and can it be trusted?
As with all AI tools, Expana IQ can hallucinate or make mistakes. Whilst we take great care in creating the best products that we can, users are responsible for checking that the outputs from Expana IQ are correct.
AI tools can sometimes behave in ways that are inaccurate, incomplete, or unreliable. For example, the responses that you receive may not accurately reflect the information they are based on, or they may generate content that sounds reasonable but is incomplete.
Outputs produced by an AI tool (including Expana IQ) should therefore not be used as a definitive authority. We encourage you to think about the situations when you use AI tools and review the quality of the outputs you receive from them.
How does Expana IQ use my personal data?
Expana IQ processes personal data – such as your Expana IQ user chat transcripts, Expana user preferences, and Expana cost models, etc – to provide and personalise the Expana IQ products and features you use.
Expana also processes this data, together with other personal data (such as your IP address, the browser you’re using, etc) and any feedback you choose to provide about Expana IQ, for security purposes, to enable us to investigate bugs or issues, and to enable us to learn from how users interact with Expana IQ.
We take the privacy and security of your personal data seriously. Any personal data shared with Expana (including Expana IQ user chat transcripts):
– Is not available to other customers and is only used to serve your experience and carry out the activities outlined above.
– Is not sent to any LLM outside of Expana’s private cloud infrastructure on Azure and is therefore not accessible by any external third-party LLM provider.
– Is not used to train any LLMs.
We store Expana IQ user chat transcripts so you can return to and continue past chats, and for the purposes described above. Unless your organisation has agreed a different retention period, Expana IQ user chat transcripts are retained for one year from the date of the most recent message in the chat, after which they are soft-deleted. Users can also delete their chats at any time, in which case they are soft-deleted immediately. In either case, soft-deleted chats are fully and irretrievably deleted within 30 days. Speak to your account representative if your organisation would like to arrange a different retention period.
Expana’s use of personal data is governed by Expana’s Privacy Policy and the Data Protection terms between Expana and the subscribing customer.
Is Expana IQ Connect secure?
Expana IQ Connect follows Expana’s established security policies and controls. All customer data is treated as confidential and is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2 or higher) and at rest (AES-256 or equivalent). Access is restricted to authorised personnel in line with Expana’s access control policies.

Does Expana IQ respect data residency?
Expana’s private cloud infrastructure is hosted across Microsoft Azure regions in the UK, EU, and US, depending on the service and architectural requirements. Customers do not currently have the ability to select a specific hosting region.
Can I turn off Expana IQ if my organisation is not ready to use it?
Yes. You can contact our Customer Success Team to request that Expana IQ is deactivated for your subscription. Please note that AI-powered search features cannot be turned off.
